Synopsis

Each spring, hundreds of millions of people in China return home to reunite with families for the Chinese New Year. As China dashes for a booming economy, more and more people migrate to bigger cities, seeking better work and living conditions than in their hometown. Families, rural villages, and favored hometown cuisine are left behind. Once home, a different atmosphere takes place with fierce cooking contest, and shared meals with delicate foods. Chinese people reconnect, reward, and celebrate through food.

The documentary film « A Bite of China: Celebrating the Chinese New Year » invites us into Chinese homes celebrating the most important period of the year. In harvesting, preserving, and cooking foods, the people filmed during the documentary are attempting to preserve traditional ways of life that are evaporating in a fast-growing China.
